Arkansas River

Copyrighted Photo From above the town of Buena Vista down to Canon City, this river is a gem. It is a wild brown trout fishery, not to mention holding some very healthy rainbows. There are miles of public water to fish. This river has some tremendous insect hatches, one of which is the famous caddis hatch mid- to late-April and lasting through the early summer months.

The Arkansas sits in a “banana belt,” as the stunning, lofty peaks of the Sawatch Mountains extract most of the moisture from the air, providing the Arkansas River Valley with over 300 sunny days a year.

The major accesses to the Arkansas are from Hwy. 285, or west on Hwy. 50 from Pueblo, or south from I-70 to Hwy. 24 through Leadville.
